Yesterday in Salerno, Italy, Associazione Akira hosted psychologists, trainers and representatives of nonprofit organizations for the focus group "Youth: peer relations, risk of isolation and prevention", part of the activities of our project. An opportunity to share and exchange knowledge and experiences among professionals who work with and for young people. The event allowed the participants to analyse the voluntary social isolation phenomenon, or hikikomori. Some characteristics identified in cases of voluntary social isolation were shared and analyzed, and possible warning signs and actions to prevent and contrast the phenomenon were debated. The results of the meeting, together with the data collected by the other partner organizations in Bulgaria, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Hungary, will guide our youth workers in September to define new strategies to support young people at risk of voluntary social isolation and those youngsters who are already experiencing it.
